From a hole in the ground to a completed stunning outdoor pool and surrounds, Coastwide Waterproofing worked their magic on this project, step-by-step using a full LATICRETE installation system. 

LATICRETE NSW Technical Services Rep Craig Hunter was on site with the Coastwide Waterproofing team in Central Coast NSW while they installed 70m² of Ezarri Mosaic tiles in this residential pool using a full LATICRETE system.

Victoria Indoor Pool

 

This gorgeous indoor pool comes with its own tiled feature wall! This stunning pool was tiled by Paul and the team at Oceania Pool Tiling. Project Spotlight: Hendra Private Residence

 

A big backyard with a beautiful pool, could life get much better than that? According to a Hendra, QLD homeowner, that was just the beginning! 

The owner envisioned a full upgrade to their outdoor area. The existing pool was 52m², and the owner wanted it extended to include a spa, bench seating, steps, with visions of an onyx water and light feature. The owner knew the tilework had to be of a very high standard to bring the pool features together and draw the eye towards the stand-out onyx feature. After doing research, the homeowners worked with designer, Alistair Hutton, who would bring their dream to reality. Alistair contacted Sam Gardener, an expert tiler specialising in pools to handle the installation. 

The backyard was already a hub of activity when Sam arrived on the scene. The team from Everscapes Landscaping were overhauling the backyard area to include a new fireplace and garden beds. After lengthy discussions and site visits with the owner on what had to be done, Sam immediately contacted LATICRETE Australia Technical Sales Representative, Shane Anderson in QLD to discuss the project and obtain advice. Sam knew LATICRETE products provided solutions which he and countless other contractors around the world have come to trust and rely on.

Naval Academy Competition Pools

The United States Naval Academy educates and trains individuals who patrol international waters and is one of the highest-ranked public liberal arts colleges in the nation. There is also a strong and competitive intercollegiate swimming and diving team at the academy, and there were needs for facilities that reflected and encouraged continued success in the water. In 2012, the USNA had its existing competition pools renovated to meet these needs.

True competition pools are much different than your average high school or community pool. For example, diving pools must possess specific dimensions in order to be safe and operational. The newly-designed USNA diving pool has a depth of over 4 metres, and the racing pool measures 50 metres in length in order to be fit for competition.

Typically when building a pool, a key concern is keeping the base and shell completely sealed so that water does not leak out. But because the pool sat 50 metres below sea level, the construction team, Profast Commercial Flooring, also had to worry about water leaking in. While working below sea level is not a new task for highly-skilled construction and installation specialists, it still cannot be taken lightly.

Ceramic Tiles in Pools

When planning to install ceramic tiles in pools there are some major considerations to take in to account when planning the installation.

Design Considerations

• Primary types of swimming pool structures - cast-in-place reinforced concrete, Gunite or Shot-Crete Reinforced Concrete
• Movement/expansion joints - movement and expansion joints allow for shrinkage, expansion and movement in the substrate. 
• Deflection - the project design should include the intended use and necessary allowances for the expected loads, including the weight of the finish and installation materials.

Installation Procedures

• Surface preparation - substrates should be smooth, free of defects, and level for bonding of waterproofing membrane and ceramic tile. 
• Waterproofing - installation of HYDRO BAN® in submerged applications must be installed without voids/interruptions. 
• Selection and installation of ceramic tile - use of paper face mounted tiles is recommended and use only impervious or vitreous tiles.
• Grouting of ceramic tile - SPECTRALOCK® PRO Premium Grout and LATAPOXY® SP100 Epoxy Grout use unique technology and are not subject to effects of water treatment. PERMACOLOR® Grout provides a durable grout that is ideal for submerged installations.

Maintenance 

• Opening, seasonal closing and pool idling for maintenance and repairs - observe an average minimum cure time for cementitious or epoxy grout installations to reach maximum chemical resistance prior to filling pool. Fill pool with water at a rate of 610 mm per 24 hours to allow gradual exposure to water pressure, thermal and moisture differentials.
• Effects of water treatment in tiled swimming pools - The balance of the pool water is primarily responsible for problems with maintenance of tiled swimming pools. Acidity, alkalinity and the amounts of mineral salts (water hardness) in swimming pool water must be kept in balance to prevent, among other things, contamination and deterioration of Portland cement plasters, mortars and grouts.

Upper Kedron Residential Pool

 

Maximum Tiling recently completed this residential project in Upper Kedron, QLD. The project consisted of glass mosaics for the waterline and 600x600x25mm porcelain coping, installed using LATICRETE materials, supplied by The Pool Tile Company. 335 Premium Flexible Adhesive was used for the mosaics and coping, as well as bonding the bedding and the render to the shell. 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed was also used for this project. 

• 335 Premium Flexible Adhesive is a high performance thin-bed adhesive for installing a wide range of tiles and stone including low absorption ceramic tile, porcelain tile, natural and manufactured stone using thin-set method of installation. Exceeds the requirements of AS ISO13007.1&2 classification C2TES1. Excellent for exterior and underwater applications, superior bond to masonry.  
• 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed is a polymer fortified blend of carefully selected polymers, Portland cement and graded aggregates. 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed does not require the use of latex admix, you only need to add water to produce thick bed mortar with exceptional strength.
