'The Garden Courtyard' Mural

This wonderful mural commission, "The Garden Courtyard" was recently completed by mosaic artist Sandy Robertson in QLD, and will be featured in a local nursing home.

"This fantasy, floral mural hopefully will bring joy, happiness, and inspiration in a very special mosaic flower and veggie garden precinct. HeART and soul mosaics with Laticrete all the way!" ~ Sandy Robertson.

The mural was installed onto cement sheeting and a range of LATICRETE materials were used throughout the project including:
  • HYDRO BAN® is a thin, load-bearing waterproofing/crack isolation membrane that DOES NOT require the use of fabric in the field, coves or corners.
  • 335 Premium Flexible Adhesive - high-performance thin-bed adhesive for installing a wide range of tiles and stone including low absorption ceramic tile, porcelain tile, natural and manufactured stone using thin-set method of installation.
  • 254 Platinum - the ultimate one-step, polymer fortified, thin-set mortar for interior and exterior installation of ceramic tile, stone, quarry tile, pavers, and brick.
  • 4237 Latex Additive - specially designed latex additive for use with 211 Powder to make high strength latex thin-set bed up to 13 mm and medium bed up to 15 mm mortars.

A Tribute to Steve Irwin

It's Been a Decade

September 4th, 2016, will mark 10 years since the world lost one of the most iconic and influential Australian wildlife conservationists, Steve Irwin. The impact Steve left on the world is everlasting, therefore it was fitting for an everlasting tribute to be made in memory of such a great man

In 2008 Sandy Roberston from Oz Mosaics paid tribute to Steve and his family by creating a mosaic mural, which is now installed at the Australia Zoo, QLD.

At the time Sandy stated “I was shocked to hear of Steve’s passing away. As I worked on a mosaic that day, I could not get out of my head the vision of how so many people were paying tribute with flowers, kindness and messages at Australia Zoo and the outpouring of emotions worldwide. I posted a note on the mosaic addict’s group website about how sad I felt, and later posted again with the idea of making a mural and presenting it to Terri Irwin, perhaps for Australia Zoo or somewhere in Queensland.”

Sandy had no idea the outpouring of response would be as huge as it was. Two years after her original post, she had received more than 350 segments for the mural across the globe ranging from “ants to gigantic camels!”. At that point, she declared, “We have been receiving mosaic art on fibreglass mesh to compile our huge mosaic mural from beginners to professional mosaic artists in Canada, USA, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and other locations. It’s emotional, wonderful and exciting. Most importantly, they will be on public view at Australia Zoo forever!”  Click here to read the full Project Spotlight.

Taken from OzMosaics Facebook page:

After completion, photos and the making of the mural will be featured on OzMosaics website. It's day 3 of the 20 day project and all is going very well and the children are very eager and helpful every day working on the mosaic project.

We are using Laticrete products for this important project and the Thinset #335, Hyrdoban, PermaColour grout, 4237 are all "doing their thing" and ensuring it's a long-lasting, professional project."

LATICRETE Featured in ProjectLink

Australian Project Spotlight: John Leak Monument

An extract from the above Project Spotlight:

"The entire monument was an artistic creation consisting of thousands of colourful mosaic tiles held together by The LATICRETE® System. LATICRETE materials were provided by Sandy Robertson of OzMosaics, also a mosaic artist, whose tour de force mosaic performance a few years ago for the Australia Zoo (in honour of Steve Irwin) also depended solely on LATICRETE installation products.

LATICRETE®  Hydro Ban®  was used to seal and waterproof the concrete base. The artists selected this product because being situated on the riverfront in Rockhampton, the monument with its mosaics needed to be flood-proof. "We selected LATICRETE PermaColor™ Grout mixed with LATICRETE 4237 Latex Additive. These products had come highly recommended from Sandy Robertson of OzMosaics," added Hills.

"LATICRETE Hydro Ban was extremely easy to apply and had great coverage. Apart from providing a great waterproofing membrane, it also provided an even base for the application of the mosaics. LATICRETE PermaColor Grout mixed with LATICRETE 4237 Latex Additive also
were very easy to use. We used a couple of different coloured grouts to complement the key features in the mosaic; they blended together really well," continued Hills."

What Mosaic Artists Love & What We Love

We love Mosaic Artists - Sometimes they love us -
The video says it all !
   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqHRS0XwYcg&feature=em-share_video_user

Nancie Mills Pipgras sent the below email to our GM, Henry B. Rothberg regarding the above YouTube video:

"As I type this, there have already been over 100 hits and even a comment including, "will check out the laticrete page."  Can you say "Results"?
In addition, I trumpeted the new MAN sponsorship and mentioned LATICRETE's support of contemporary mosaic art - MAN and SAMA - in this week's BOM.  Nothing of what I wrote is disingenuous or gratuitous. You folks really are "the real deal" and the mosaic community should know that.
A PDF of The BOM attached and here is the URL: http://eepurl.com/xMEjX   This week's distribution was over 4,900 subscribers - the list keeps growing"

Beautiful Mermaid Mosaic

This amazing mermaid "Sirena" and surrounding scene was created by Mosaic Diva Sandy Robertson from Oz Mosaics. Sandy had to create the mural working over the swimming pool and admits falling in just once!

Sandy uses LATICRETE products in all her mosaic work.

LATICRETE 4237 is the original latex additive for tile and stone adhesives. LATICRETE 4237 will mix with LATICRETE 211 Crete Filler powder to make a high strength, chemical, shock and vibration resistant adhesive. Suitable for swimming pools, facades, commercial and industrial tile and stone installations. Mix LATICRETE 4237 with LATICRETE PermaColor® or LATICRETE Sanded Grout to make a coloured adhesive for installing glass mosaics.

Sandy Robertson - Mosaic Diva!

Sandy with four panels she created from the
Steve Irwin Mural Project (2008)

We received this wonderfully thoughtful email from Sandy Robertson. Sandy is an inspirational and motivational professional mosaic artist who is hooked on LATICRETE!

Sandy will be creating another mosaic masterpiece at Australia Zoo on Steve Irwin Day - November 15 2011. All are welcome to watch and participate, and it would be great if you could donate a gold coin to the Zoo Animal Charities.

Hi Shea!

I love Laticrete more than chocolate and that is saying a LOT!
I am redoing our website at the moment and will send you the link when it’s complete this week.  Huge overhaul so stay tuned.  I am writing all about Laticrete (again!).

Thank you, I would so love to participate in the marketing stories;  I have used Laticrete exclusively in my mosaic commissions, teaching and more for almost 10 years and hundreds of my students use it in their mosaics – I have them all addicted to mosaics and Laticrete.

Laticrete never lets us down, in products and professional services and people.

I will be in touch when the new site is launched this week and I hope we can link you your blogs too.  I have a huge following in FB, Twitter and online forums I moderate all about mosaics.

We are off to Australia Zoo on Steve Irwin Day to do a community mural on the big day (15-11-2011) and perhaps Laticrete would like to donate the grout for the panel?  (Probably only one bag!)  -  I am very happily donating all the materials, time and labour - but Laticete was a great champion of the Steve Irwin Mural Project a few years ago and provided materials for 10 panels.  This next panel may be installed at the animal hospital (wonderful publicity too).

This is only one panel but it’s the community spirit and all about the great  Croc Hunter.
Just thought you might be interested, I haven’t had time to ask Ken yet.  Either way, Laticrete will be part of this project as Henry was so in awe of it too!

Must run, will email new site link soon and I have a long list of projects on the go at the moment from Church Murals next year to be installed, huge pool wall murals, tables, and also an art show at Wesley Hospital to raise money for Palliative Care Unit.

If Laticrete Australia, considered coming on board as a sponsor to some of these community events, it would touch the heart and art of many Australians and mosaic followers around the world.  It’s not about money, as I said before, I am always delighted to do these projects, but it would be a good community partnership….

I love the epoxy products and  have excited the mosaic world with new uses for it  and I have an online mosaic school, The Mosaic Guru International being launched.

Always busy!
Kind regards, and I am so delighted to hear from you, Ken mentioned the newsletter quite a long time ago and I hope we can have some articles even about some of the kids who are now using Laticrete – I train them young to do the job right!

LOL!
Cheers
Sandy Robertson
