La Casa De Esperanza

Join us each week for a look at some stunning LATICRETE projects from around the world! This week we're showcasing La Casa De Esperanza in Wisconsin, USA.

Founded in 1966, La Casa De Esperanza, which stands for ‘The House of Hope,’ is a full-service charter school located in Waukesha with a mission to provide opportunities for children to achieve full social and economic participation in society, with emphasis on the Hispanic population.

With the construction of a new charter building, the school came together with more than 50 students and community members to design a beautiful façade mural to create a cumulative design that represented the school's history and community.

The final design of the mural was 4.2m by 7.3m, and installed using a full system of LATICRETE products, including waterproofing using HYDRO BAN®, and grouted using SPECTRALOCK® Pro Premium Grout.

AC Marriott Hotel Mosaic Installation

Join us each week for a look at some stunning LATICRETE projects from around the world! This week we're showcasing the Antonio Catalan (AC) Marriott Hotel in Texas, USA.

The AC Marriott Hotel features modern American architectural design with a Spanish twist, and developer Jackson Shaw wanted to accentuate this with an eye-catching sculpture in the front entranceway to make a lasting impression.

Shaw chose mosaic designer Julie Richey to create the stunning 7.23m² Pamplona Rose column, inspired by the traditional stitched polaina that adorned the boots of Spanish horse riders. The column, along with the tiled entryway floor, used almost 100kg of glass mosaics in 35 different colours.

Julie Richey chose a LATICRETE solution for this installation, electing to use LATAPOXY® 300 Adhesive for the perfect bond to the unique fibreglass structure of the column. She grouted the mosaic with SPECTRALOCK® PRO Premium Grout, and sealed with LATASIL™ to complete this epic project!

“I have always had excellent results with LATICRETE and trust the quality. Working on commercial and residential mosaic projects means each one has a different set of challenges: site, intended use, physical materials, etc. In any situation, the LATICRETE technical support services are an essential tool for me to learn which materials work best for any given application”
- Julie Richey

Annual Tile Apprentice Contest in Boston!

LATICRETE was pleased to be part of Boston's BAC Local 3 Apprenticeship Program again this year. The program has been a success in Boston since the early 90's, helping hundreds of young men and woman learn a rewarding trade that will last a lifetime.

The apprenticeship program starts with a 10-week pre-job training course and also requires 5,000 hours of on-the-job training under the watchful eyes of veteran journeymen. Above are photos from the annual Apprentice Contest at the BAC Local 3 Training Centre in Boston. The tile-installing contest had the apprentice tile installers preparing a wall to accept ceramic tile. They then installed a combination of 100mm x 100mm ceramic tiles in various colours with a band of tile cut in a diamond shape. After completion of the wall, the apprentices were required to build a mud pan that included a 12º pitch to the drain using 50mm x 50mm mosaic tile on a mud floor. The mosaic tile had to be cut precisely to fit around the circular drain. The judges rated the contestants on overall layout, alignment, proper pitch as well as the precision of any cut tile. Some of the contestants will be chosen to compete nationally as well.

The theme as you can see in the pictures is celebrating the Boston Red Sox 100 year anniversary with LATICRETE's Hydro Ban creating Boston's Green Monster!
