Tips from Technical Services on Cement Backer Boards

The latest Technical article by Fred Gray, LATICRETE Technical Service Manager, provides insightful information regarding cement backer boards and whether they are a suitable substrate for exterior applications.

There are many different types of cement backer boards being used internally and externally on projects around Australia, and from a tiling prospective there is a big difference between what we can and should not tile.

Firstly and contrary to general belief, most cement backer boards are not rated as backgrounds for tiling in exterior environments by the manufacturer. In fact I know of only a few boards that are approved to be used for exterior wall cladding which are also load limited to around 40kgs/m2.
And no, you should not be tiling those brightly coloured boards that are designed for texture coats. Many of the exterior floor boards come with built in moisture blockers that act as bond inhibitors for tile adhesive. So great care must be taken when specifying or commencing work on cement backer boards, in particular exterior environments. Prior to tiling exterior cement backer boards with moisture blockers be sure to apply a coating of LATAPOXY® Moisture Shield to ensure a great bond for HYDRO BAN®
