Bellingen Streetscape Project - Stage 1

The Bellingen streetscape upgrade in NSW is currently underway for the Bellingen Shire Council, and stage one is now complete. The 600m2 area was installed with quartz cobblestone and LATICRETE materials, supplied by Amber Coffs Harbour, and installed by Kwik Kerb Coffs Harbour. 

LATICRETE materials used include: 

• 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed - A polymer fortified blend of carefully selected polymers, Portland cement and graded aggregates. 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed does not require the use of latex admix, you only need to add water to produce thick bed mortar with exceptional strength. 
• 254 Platinum - The ultimate one-step, polymer fortified, thin-set adhesive. For interior and exterior installation of ceramic and stone tile, reduced thickness porcelain, quarry tile, pavers and thin brick. 
• PERMACOLOR® Grout - Offers the maximum performance available in a cement-based grout, providing consistent colour and antimicrobial protection to resist stain-causing mould and mildew. PERMACOLOR Grout is easy to install – just mix with water.

Project Spotlight: Hilton Rainbow Towers

The Hilton’s Rainbow Tower stands tall over the Waikiki beach and Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon in the Waikiki neighbourhood in Honolulu, HI. Whether you spotted it in the opening credits to “Hawaii Five-O” or in photographs, you have likely seen the hotel's impressive dual rainbow murals. In 1968, the Rainbow Tower opened with what is considered “the world’s largest ceramic tile mosaic.” With 16,000 tiles the murals stand 87 metres tall, 8 metres wide and can be seen on either end of the tower. After more than 45 years, the integrity of the installation was failing, and the murals’ loose and weather-beaten tiles posed a serious safety concern - the entire installation needed to be replaced.

The project faced two major challenges: Scale and Orientation. Not only was the total size of the project daunting, but the tile installation required a flat vertical surface. The nearly-91 metre vertical span of the murals made a completely flat surface difficult to achieve under the best of circumstances. The Elements—while Hawaii enjoys famously pleasant weather, the towers are constantly buffeted by wind and temperatures that could reach 60°C on the surface of the murals. Furthermore, the seaside-facing mural had to deal with saltwater spray.

Project Spotlight: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

In 2012, The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' received a new Nature Research Center wing. The new wing offers highly visible research laboratories where qualified scientists conduct unique research projects while visitors are right next to them, observing and learning. Additional investigative labs offer visitors a chance to perform their own small-scale experiments and try their hand at using tools of the trade. "This way, we're able to get visitors more directly involved in the scientific process," said museum's Communications Director, Jon Pishney.

Visitors to the museum can not only see incredibly well-executed tile installations throughout the new wing, one of the facility's tile projects offers them the opportunity to get interactively involved with the earth's timeline. The Nature Research Center is connected to the existing museum via a two-level pedestrian bridge. On the upper story of it, there is a progression of handmade tiles positioned along handrails, created by artist Barbara Page, which represents the passage of geologic time.
