Colour Variations in Grout

Un-modified vs Modified Cement Grouts

An informative article on managing the perception of colour variance in grout, written by LATICRETE R&D Manager, Dr. Surendra Patel.
Even though the occurrence or perception of uneven cement grout colour is declining its worth going over some of the causes of colour variance and how we can further ensure a great looking tiling installation. It is worth noting colour variation is more likely with un-modified cement grouts than modified cement grouts, however they can both get soiled or be used incorrectly.

There are many factors which can contribute to the colour variations or the perception of colour variation, such as:

Controlling batches
Using grouts from different batches may result in colour variance; using previously opened bags that have not been stored correctly may result if variable appearance.

Mixing
Not achieving a homogenous consistent mix, using incorrect and varying amounts of water; not allowing sufficient slake time can also cause colour variance and performance differences

Preparation
Not cleaning out joints; varying moisture content of joints and tile bedding; varying depths of adhesives; leaving spacers in, all contribute to colour variance

Work methods
Using too much water during the cleaning process; using contaminated tools and sponges; using contaminated water; working in extreme conditions

Protection
Not allowing adequate curing before putting into service or cleaning; allowing rapid or varying rates of drying; allowing traffic on fresh grout; cleaning with aggressive chemicals;

Appearance
How light reflects off tiles will give a perception of colour variance; different types of tiles in the same area can give a perception of colour variance; the entrapment of pigment in certain tiles will result in colour variation

On projects where there are hight expectations of the grout performance and colour uniformity, epoxy grouts are a better choice. When used correctly they exhibit far better colour consistency with a greater capacity to be cleaned back to the original colour. However they can still be misused and affected by variation in lighting.

SPECTRALOCK® PRO Grout is a patented, high performance epoxy grout that offers colour uniformy durability and stain resistance with extraordinary ease of use. Click here for more info and to view an installation video.
