Training at Randwick TAFE

Recently, LATICRETE Australia Technical Manager Fred Gray, and NSW LATICRETE Technical Sales Rep Craig Hunter, were invited to spend some time and train the tiling apprentice students at Randwick TAFE NSW on LATICRETE products. Time was spent in the classroom and also in practice where the students actively participated in hands on training.

LATICRETE Products Demonstrated:

• HYDRO BAN® - HYDRO BAN is a thin, load bearing waterproofing/crack isolation membrane that DOES NOT require the use of fabric in the field, coves or corners. Randwick TAFE Training

In July LATICRETE Technical Sales Rep from NSW, Craig Hunter, and LATICRETE Australia Technical Services Manager, Fred Gray, conducted training at Randwick TAFE. 1st year tiling students were actively hands on with practical learning, with the opportunity to mix, use, and feel the difference between a range of LATICRETE adhesives. 

In the classroom students discussed the various technical characteristics and classifications of adhesives, to be better prepared and informed about choosing the right adhesive for different projects they may encounter in the workplace, e.g. Large thin panel tile, pool mosaics, and commercial applications. 

LATICRETE products demonstrated include:

• Ultra X8 Polymer Fortified Flexible Adhesive - A creamy and smooth to trowel thin-set adhesive for installing all types of tile and stone over a wide range of surfaces. Mixed with either water or for additional strength and performance with LATICRETE latex admixtures for installing porcelain, vitrified, ceramic and stone tiles on floors and walls in both internal and external areas.
• LATAFLEX Gold Adhesive - A superior performance polymer fortified, rubber reinforced thin-set adhesive for installing ceramic tile and stone using the thin-bed method of installation. Designed for interior and exterior floor and wall installations of all types of ceramic tiles, porcelain tile and stone over concrete, exterior glue plywood and a variety of substrates.
• 254 Platinum (Previously 345 Platinum) - The ultimate one-step, polymer fortified, thin-set adhesive. For interior and exterior installation of ceramic and stone tile, reduced thickness porcelain, quarry tile, pavers and thin brick. 254 Platinum provides long open time with unsurpassed adhesion and workability. Designed to just mix with water. Suitable for immersed installations. Meets and exceeds the requirements for a C2TES2P2 classification.

LATICRETE Attends Award Ceremony

Dr. H.M Rothberg Award Presented to...

TAFE NSW - Randwick, recently hosted their 2017 Graduation Award Ceremony for students doing Carpentry & Joinery, Plumbing & Fire Protection; and Wall & Floor Tiling. Suppliers were invited to attend the ceremony.

LATICRETE supports and assists Randwick TAFE in developing and educating students to gain a better understanding of the ceramic tile and stone industry.

In continuing with a new tradition, the Dr. H.M. Rothberg trophy, sponsored by LATICRETE is presented to the Outstanding Student for Certificate 111 in Wall & Floor Tiling.

This year the Dr. H.M. Rothberg award, was awarded to Anthony Cotello. Anthony could not attend the award ceremony and LATICRETE Technical Sales Rep, Craig Hunter caught up with him to present him with the LATICRETE trophy, certificate and voucher.

The voucher will help in establishing Anthony in purchasing tools and equipment, to further build his career in the tile and stone industry.

Jenny Keeley, TAFE Randwick teacher had said "I thought Anthony embodied the principals the Dr. H.M Rothberg trophy represents."

LATICRETE wish Anthony Cotello and all the 2016 graduates all the very best in their new venture as qualified installers.

Following on from our blog LATICRETE gets behind TAFE training Craig Hunter, LATICRETE NSW Technical Sales Rep, and Fred Gray, LATICRETE Technical Service Manager, were invited back to Sydney Randwick TAFE to provide training and share their knowledge on LATICRETE materials and to discuss tiling standards.

Craig and Fred spent some time in the classroom with the first year students explaining the classifications of adhesives. The students then had the opportunity to get their hands dirty with mixing up 345 Platinum. 
With the aid of some perspex tiles, students got to see the benefits of back buttering tiles.

What an Achievement - What an Award!

On Wednesday 18^th May LATICRETE NSW Technical Sales Rep, Craig Hunter, attended the Randwick TAFE Graduation Celebration for 2016 evening at Sydney Randwick TAFE, NSW. LATICRETE is proud to continually be involved with Randwick TAFE and in helping students gain a better understanding of the ceramic tile and stone industry.

As part of the ongoing commitment to educate and train the next generation, LATICRETE was the proud sponsor of the "Dr H.M. Rothberg" trophy which is awarded to the Outstanding Student for Certificate III in Wall & Floor Tiling for 2015.

Craig Hunter awarded the "Dr H.M Rothberg" award and trophy to the Outstanding Student for 2015 to Nurudeen Adeleke - well done Nurudeen!

In April, LATICRETE Australia Technical Manager Fred Gray, and NSW LATICRETE Technical Sales Rep Craig Hunter were invited to spend some time and train the 3rd year tiling apprentice students at Randwick TAFE NSW on LATICRETE products. Time was spent not only in the classroom, but also in practice where the students actively participated in hands on training using LATICRETE products.

The two topics of discussion and training was: Waterproofing methods and Epoxy grouts.

1. Waterproofing methods - the group discussed current Australian standards, product classifications and had hands-on demonstrations. Students got to demonstrate with LATICRETE HYDRO BAN® Adhesive & Sealant as a bond breaker and HYDRO BAN liquid waterproof membrane. The students were enthusiastic with being able to use the product first hand and showed confidence in the material used in a short time.

2. The second topic was epoxy grout, a subject not covered by the TAFE curriculum, and where most trades can find themselves in panic mode when they hear those words for the first time.

Discussions were around the early tribulations of epoxy grout and how it has advanced in becoming an innovative and productive easy to use grout that it is today. The requirements of epoxy in specification work for commercial applications for hygiene and cleaning standards and also its emergence and popularity in the domestic residential market for its cleanability by the homeowner. 

Students participated in the mixing and grouting of mosaic tile using SPECTRALOCK® PRO Grout and were amazed at the ease of the cold water clean-up.

The students were keen to learn and pick up tips within the Australian standards, for any future job site requirements.
