The Awesome Arts Festival in Australia is
conducted annually throughout regional areas in Western Australia and is designed to introduce students to a variety of creative mediums to encourage them to learn new skills. Twelve pairs
of artists from a range of creative mediums are chosen each year to participate, 8 pairs from
Western Australia and 4 from interstate. This year Denise Chard and Lee
Fullarton were chosen to represent Queensland.
Denise and Lee work in collaboration with
school communities in the creative medium of art glass mosaics. They also enjoy
being a part of the Artists in Residencies program to help in the creation of a
number of major art works throughout South East Queensland.
The Awesome Arts project was carried out in
Mt. Magnet, which is a small gold mining town 600km north east of Perth, WA.
The project topic for 2018 was ‘Your Voice’ and the process consisted of
working with the local school community and engaging participants to develop
themes to explore, including tolerance, empathy, mindfulness, community,
culture, identity, and place. Using these themes, students created personal
stories and numerous students included aspects of their indigenous culture.
Denise and Lee assisted in the creation of
approximately 40-45 circular pieces which were created using glass mosaics
installed on to Blue Board, using a range of LATICRETE materials including 4237 Latex Additive and PERMACOLOR® Grout. The artworks
were then installed on the wall of the Art and Music wing at the school with
the assistance of the teachers.
“LATICRETE is always our product of choice because of its
longevity, proven endurance and ease of use. These beautiful story mosaics will
be part of the Mt. Magnet school for many, many years to come and the students
who were able to participate were certainly very proud of themselves when they
saw the end result” – Denise Chard from Denise Chard Creative Glass Designs, and Lee
FullARTon Artist.
