Pool Underway in Sans Souci

This pool project in Sans Souci, NSW, is currently underway for Dapcor builders, featuring 120m2 of porcelain Serapool tiles, supplied by The Pool Tile Company. Waterproofing has been completed by Troy Naylor, and tiling is being carried out by Knewbee Tiling, using a range of LATICRETE materials.

LATICRETE materials used:
  • LATAPOXY® Moisture Shield is a 2 component, roller applied epoxy coating specifically designed to reduce moisture vapour emissions in concrete and other substrates.
  • HYDRO BAN® is a thin, load bearing waterproofing/crack isolation membrane that DOES NOT require the use of fabric in the field, coves or corners. HYDRO BAN is a single component, self-curing liquid polymer that forms a flexible, seamless waterproofing membrane that bonds directly to a wide variety of substrates.
  • LATAPOXY® 300 Adhesive is a chemical resistant, epoxy adhesive that will bond to most sound, clean surfaces. The adhesive spreads easily and cleans with water while fresh. LATAPOXY 300 Adhesive is a factory-proportioned kit consisting of epoxy resin, hardener and chemical resistant silica filler.

Keep your eyes peeled for more on this project!

Installation of Large Format Ceramic Tile and Stone

Contractor: Chris Stenhouse   |   Photographer: Tahnee Jade Photography

Twenty to twenty-five years ago choosing tile was simple. Floor tile was typically 200mm x 200mm and wall tile was 100mm x 100mm and there were a couple dozen options for colour on the floor and several options for wall tile colour. The old saying, “you can have any colour you want as long as it’s white” was not far from the truth. With the tremendous advances in technology and materials, the average tile installation is no longer average.

For many years the tile manufacturing trend was to create a wider variety of textures and colours for stone; but more recently there has been a trend to manufacture and install larger and larger tile.

Large format tile was considered to be 300mm x 300mm and was on the cutting edge of technology. Now tile is available from 10mm x 10mm glass mosaic to 1220mm x 1220mm porcelain and larger.

Some advantages of having large format tile installed include:
1. Narrow grout joints – rectified, large format tile allows for thinner grout joint widths
2. Easier maintenance – it is typically much easier to clean the face of tile than it is to clean grout.
3. Room size perception – the perception is that large tile makes the room in which it is installed appear larger.

Amongst others, five of the main considerations with large format ceramic and stone tile are:
  • Floor Flatness
  • Lippage
  • Thin-Set Adhesive Coverage
  • Movement Joint Requirement
  • Curing/Protection

Masonry Veneer Installation System Brochure

Up to now, the installation of manufactured stone masonry veneer has often depended on the use of site-mixed unfortified masonry mortars that are subject to large variations in consistency, quality and performance and which also limit the installation technique to that of traditional masonry. This traditional method is not engineered as part of a complete wall system and therefore does not offer warranties from a reliable source willing to stand behind the installation.

The Masonry Veneer Installation System brochure provides information on LATICRETE installation systems that provide permanent, high strength installations that are freeze/thaw stable and protected from water intrusion. The Masonry Veneer Installation System (MVIS™) allows for increased productivity utilising either traditional masonry installation techniques or the “tiler’s method”. Vastly expanded architectural details are offered to help design professionals, contractors and installers understand the range of possible applications – and appropriate products and techniques which will assure long-term performance on projects of all types. HYDRO BAN® Over Rough Surfaces

Prior to the installation of LATICRETE HYDRO BAN® to out of tolerance walls, they can be dimensionally corrected and made smooth with a LATICRETE parge, skim or render coat to a wood float or light steel trowelled finish. When it comes to floors, these can generally be made smooth by screeding to falls with a LATICRETE mortar or levelled with a LATICRETE self-levelling compound. The use of LATICRETE latex mortars or dry polymer mortars will allow the dimensional correction and flattening of surfaces from a feather edge to any desired thickness. Do not use gypsum or asphalt based levelling products.

The designed dry film thickness of HYDRO BAN liquid applied waterproof membrane is 0.6 mm – 0.9 mm. This dry film thickness range is required for the membrane to perform as a part of an installation system under ceramic or stone tile. The background/substrate surface smoothness/ flatness, planarity of finish or its regularity is an important factor in achieving this design thickness. The flatter the surface, the easier it will be to apply the membrane and the easier it will be to achieved the desired film thickness. Ideally the maximum deviation in plane must not exceed 5mm in 3m and 1.5mm in 300mm for the high spot and surfaces shall be smooth without voids, protrusions or other interruptions in the flat plane.

Naval Academy Competition Pools

The United States Naval Academy educates and trains individuals who patrol international waters and is one of the highest-ranked public liberal arts colleges in the nation. There is also a strong and competitive intercollegiate swimming and diving team at the academy, and there were needs for facilities that reflected and encouraged continued success in the water. In 2012, the USNA had its existing competition pools renovated to meet these needs.

True competition pools are much different than your average high school or community pool. For example, diving pools must possess specific dimensions in order to be safe and operational. The newly-designed USNA diving pool has a depth of over 4 metres, and the racing pool measures 50 metres in length in order to be fit for competition.

Typically when building a pool, a key concern is keeping the base and shell completely sealed so that water does not leak out. But because the pool sat 50 metres below sea level, the construction team, Profast Commercial Flooring, also had to worry about water leaking in. While working below sea level is not a new task for highly-skilled construction and installation specialists, it still cannot be taken lightly.

"When you have a project that big, you need to know you're going to have installation products that work. LATICRETE materials are spectacular… trustworthy and have a great reputation. They worked well not only for our tile installations, but for sealing and waterproofing!" said Kevin Killian, President of Profast Commercial Flooring.
